The SAMS community is committed to achieving the goals we set forth on our Continuous Improvement Plan which include a focus on developing literacy through summarizing, discussion around grade level texts, and argumentative writing. One of the ways we demonstrate this commitment is through our faithfulness in “sharpening the saw.” Our faculty meets in Collaborative Conversations weekly to discuss research based best practices and to share professional experiences.  In addition we all participate in district wide professional learning communities that focus on the Common Core State Standards and the full implementation of those standards.  We believe strongly that to help your students improve, we, too, must be committed to continuous learning. The purpose of all of our professional development is to improve our practice using the latest, research based strategies to help your student increase his/her level of learning.

In our quest to prepare students, parents, and guardians with the tools needed to help students learn best I want to remind you of a couple of great resources available to you.  These resources can be accessed directly from the SAMS website or through links from this message.  The Library/Media Services page on our site serves as a clearinghouse for much information for student research and literacy.

You have likely heard your student referring to a Lexile© “score.”  This measure is used to identify a student’s level of reading ability.  Within the Lexile © framework there is also a Lexile text measure.  Using both of these pieces of information we can help our students grow in their reading ability.  The Lexile Framework for Reading will give you additional information to help you help your student select appropriate books for increased reading success.

Another great resource is DESTINY.  Also linked to our Library/Media Services page, DESTINY provides students and parents with quality research options.  Other great resources available from the DESTINY page are NC WiseOwl and World Book Online.  Check them out with your student today!

I encourage you to looking into these resources and take advantage of them as we work together to help your student have a profitable and meaningful middle school experience.
