WELCOME!
To the South Asheboro Middle School
Choral Handbook!
I am Ms. Kathleen King.

Music is one of the oldest forms of communication. It prevails when words fail.  Every person deserves the opportunity to create, participate, and express musically. My hope for each of my students is that they develop their appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment for music that will last them throughout their lives.
GRADING:
Students begin each grading period with a grade of 100% and are encouraged to maintain that average by their diligent effort, quality mastery of work, and daily rehearsal participation through regular attendance and punctuality. Daily grades are assessed for each day’s rehearsal and may include such areas as class rehearsal attendance, having music and pencil in hand and ready to use, rehearsal focus, consistent positive class participation, promptness in getting on risers, breathing technique, energy and interest in class work, posture, attentiveness in rehearsal, attitude, and vowel production.
Students in Mixed Chorus, Men’s Choir, and Women’s Choir will be graded on:
Daily Effort, Preparation, Attendance and Participation– 35%
            Assessments & Assignments – 25%
            Performances- 40%

·         Performance and Extra Rehearsals---------NOT AN OPTION.
  •  A PERFORMANCE presented during or after school hours is a CO-CURRICULAR extension of the vocal music class. These are REQUIRED. Grading for such an activity is treated as an exam. Make up work may be assigned in lieu of a performance, but only up to a “C” letter grade. An unexcused absence from a performance will lower the student’s grade considerably.
  • Come to me at the beginning of the year with any conflicts; they will be taken into consideration. This is not a guarantee of an “excused” absence.
·         An absence from a performance may be excused under the following circumstances:
    • Critical Conflict – This is considered to be another school activity scheduled at the same time, on the same date. The student should report the conflict to Ms. King as soon as it is discovered. Ms. King will meet with the sponsor of the other activity and a resolution can be reached.
    • Sick and unable to attend – you need to get a message to Ms. King prior to the performance. Do not wait until the next grading period to explain the absence.
    • Emergency – The student should contact Ms. King before school the very next morning. A note, phone call, or email from the parent/guardian should follow. The absence may or may not be excused depending upon the seriousness of the emergency. Do not delay in making contact!
    • Work is not considered an excused absence. Plan ahead……ask off…..
  • Students must be in school ALL DAY on the day of an EXTRA-CURRICULAR event in order to participate, since concerts are for a grade, THEY ARE NOT Extra-Curricular.

General Behavior
Students are expected to be in their seats, with their music, required materials,  and a pencil, when the tardy bell rings. Students should consider their music and theory worksheets as their textbooks and are responsible for the condition and return of all music issued.
Students who have been found in violation of the SAMS Chorus Handbook will be issued a warning. Any student issued three (3) warnings will not be allowed to participate in any extra music department events; ie: trips, etc.
WE (students and music directors) will make every effort to start rehearsals promptly. Since class time is limited, PLEASE BE IN YOUR SEATS, WITH MUSIC FOLDER, READY TO START WHEN THE BELL RINGS. Remember, our main purpose is to learn and perform!
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES/RULES
  1. All school district policies will be followed
  2. Upon entering the choir room, read the board. Students are responsible for:
